LSSC10 talk – Through The Lean Looking Glass

Posted by Christophe on July 27, 2010

My talk at LSSC10 on infoQ: Through The Lean Looking Glass

Summary
Christophe Louvion tells the story of an online advertising company which had to give up using Scrum because it did not create enough business value although the development was delivering working software. They chose to use Kanban instead, applying Lean principles at all levels of the organization, resulting in true self organizing teams, accelerated rate of change, and better financial results.

A few weeks of Kanban

Posted by Christophe on May 31, 2010

I’ve been pretty silent on this blob the past few weeks. Starting a new job is quite a tow.

After doing Kanban for over a year at my previous gig, and enjoying it, it was quite natural for me to introduce it to my new teams.

The first team that jumped into it (from scrum) decided -on its own- to put a presentation for the other teams after a few weeks.

Unfiltered tidbits:

  • Stand ups differ – going story by story, not based on individuals
  • Less Rules: No roles prescribed, More Dynamic
  • Backlog more Flexible
  • Pros: Better Team Focus, Less Meetings More Time to Deliver, More Flexible Work Process
  • Cons: Less Structure Could Cause issues with Some People
  • How Its Working Out: Feels Good, Increased Our Collaboration, Communication Has Increased, Forces Follow Up to Eliminate Blockers

The team loves the reduced prescription list. This may only be a sign that they like change – this is a proactive team.

Half of my teams have now introduced Kanban changes to their scrum. Some have directly abandoned iterations and everything coming with them, some have simply added limits and changed a few things.

Having David Anderson in the office for a few days was a big catalyst. BTW, Check out his new book on Kanban.

PS: for the picture in the post? I don’t know. Ask my team. They put it in their presentation ;)

Posted by Christophe on March 30, 2009

In this Qcon 2008 presentation, David Anderson presents a brief history of the kanban system through case study reports from teams at Microsoft and Corbis. Kanban acts to limit work-in-progress and focus the team on achieving a continuous flow of value to the customer and innovates on accepted agile management practices by providing an iteration-less process with a regular release cadence.

The Lean – Kanban 2009 Conference is Rescheduled

Posted by Christophe on January 10, 2009

leankanban2009

The Lean & Kanban 2009 Conference is Rescheduled.
Here’s the notification email from David Anderson posted in the Kanbandev group:

All,

For a number of reasons, the organizing committee and speakers have
chosen to reschedule the Lean & Kanban Conference for May 6th-8th. We
did not take this decision lightly. However, given the slow rate of
registrations, we want to give everyone as much time as possible to
prepare and schedule their participation. We want to provide maximum
value to sponsors and take time to prepare a proper “Transactions”
publication with contributions from all the speakers.

All other details of the event remain unchanged. It will be held in
Miami at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the price remains the same.
You can register at http://www.leankanbanconference.com/

I will be contacting all the currently registered attendees over the
weekend offering them a refund, or a credit towards any rebooking fee
they may incur for travel changes.

I truly believe this change is the right decision and will make for a
significantly better event for all. I would like to apologize for any
inconvenience caused to the small number of you who made a commitment
and registered already. I hope will understand.

Regards,
David

David Anderson on “Future Directions for Agile”

Posted by Christophe on August 23, 2008

David Anderson (now president of Modus Cooperandi) is definitively one of the fresh minds in what some would call the “aging narrow minded agile movement”. He has been an active practitioner for years (sprint PCS/microsoft/corbis) and is talking the language of people that actually have to deliver value for their company.

In his presentation “Future Directions for Agile” at Agile 2008 he showed how kanban can serve to unify the agile and lean principles. He also called for stopping the Agile arrogance and offered to join forces with the CMMI folks to measure enterprise success.
