sd-west

The SD West 2009 conference is only 2 months away and only one more day to save up to $400! The Super Early Bird deadline ends Friday, January 16. Don’t miss out on your chance to save!

I’ll be presenting with Jean Tabaka…

Agile Leadership Recipes for the 21st Century
Speaker: Jean Tabaka (Agile Fellow, Rally Software Development)
Date/Time: Wednesday (March 11, 2009)   10:15am — 11:45am
Track: Agile Processes, People & Methods
Presentation Format: 90-minute Class
Audience level: Intermediate

Presentation Abstract
Christophe Louvion, CTO of Gorilla Nation and Jean Tabaka, Agile Fellow with Rally Software, bring their direct experiences in rolling out Agile adoptions in two different organizations. Our recipes for success reveal what worked in our two separate cases. Agile is growing and prescriptions can be dangerous, so don’t come looking for a prescription or a silver bullet! Still, we’ll share our challenges and audacious results of two 21st Century complex Agile adoptions. We’ll also warn you of 12 adoption modes we guarantee will bring you only failure. Mostly, we’ll provide straightforward practices and metrics to support our audacious claims for success from two different perspectives: a CTO and an Agile consultant.

2009 Most Famous Agile Personality Award

Posted by Christophe on January 10, 2009

While the Hollywood crowd is anxiously waiting for the “66th Annual Golden Globe Awards”(to be telecast live on NBC Sunday, January 11 (8 – 11 p.m. EST), I have the honor to present the First “Most Famous Agile Personality” Award.

Using a mix of tools (google trends, google keywords, wordtracker), I calculated the most agile personality in 2008.

The nominees (in no particular order):

  • Esther Derby
  • Mike Cohn
  • Diana Larsen
  • David Anderson
  • Kenji Hiranabe
  • Jeff Sutherland
  • Ken Schwaber
  • Jean Tabaka
  • Ron Jeffries
  • James Shore
  • Mary Poppendieck
  • Joe Little
  • Linda Rising

And the winner is…

Dilbert!
(clap – clap – clap)

dilbert

This is no joke. The key phrase “Dilbert agile” has been searched far more than any other “put_a_personality_name_here agile” search.

I know, I know. I hear already that this is not a proper comparison.

But this tells me the agile community still has a long road ahead to get agile widely adopted.

To next year’s 2nd edition.

The Lean – Kanban 2009 Conference is Rescheduled

Posted by Christophe on January 10, 2009

leankanban2009

The Lean & Kanban 2009 Conference is Rescheduled.
Here’s the notification email from David Anderson posted in the Kanbandev group:

All,

For a number of reasons, the organizing committee and speakers have
chosen to reschedule the Lean & Kanban Conference for May 6th-8th. We
did not take this decision lightly. However, given the slow rate of
registrations, we want to give everyone as much time as possible to
prepare and schedule their participation. We want to provide maximum
value to sponsors and take time to prepare a proper “Transactions”
publication with contributions from all the speakers.

All other details of the event remain unchanged. It will be held in
Miami at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and the price remains the same.
You can register at http://www.leankanbanconference.com/

I will be contacting all the currently registered attendees over the
weekend offering them a refund, or a credit towards any rebooking fee
they may incur for travel changes.

I truly believe this change is the right decision and will make for a
significantly better event for all. I would like to apologize for any
inconvenience caused to the small number of you who made a commitment
and registered already. I hope will understand.

Regards,
David

How good are you at single tasking?

Posted by Christophe on January 7, 2009

jugglerPeople believe they can multitask.

Managers want their team members to multitask.

“Give me a specific example when you had to mul-i tasks with a lot of projects” is a common recommended interview question by job interview secrets books. Google shows 300,000 results. Jobbankusa.com gives the expected answerAnswer Guide: Applicant should have the ability to problem solve, handle competing priorities, be able to multi-task and have the ability to effectively process and re-organize planning structures to ensure a successful conclusion.

Jeff Atwood at codinghorror.com gives a whole different perspective in his article “The Multi-Tasking Myth“: you lose 20% of your time for each additional task done in parallel.

A recent study from Danish researchers proved that even for something as automated as walking we have to actually think just to stay upright. This significantly prevented septuagenarians from doing simple math while walking.

The  metaphor of juggling is frequently used to represent the idea of multi-tasking. This is ironical, since jugglers do one task only: rotating balls in the air.

With pressure for getting more stuff done and constant harassment from the environment (emails, IMs, phone calls), multi-tasking is eating organization productivity alive.

multitasking

Put your phone on DND, shut down outlook, close your messenger. Pick one project – a small one, very small one – and get it done.

And next time you interview someone, ask them “how good are you at single tasking?”
